Awakening Dawn

Awakening dawn with fog in the cedar trees.
This time of the morning later turning
fog into a misty floor of evening dew.
River flowing past on its journey through the estuary.
This was Leschi's home.

Leschi, a leader born, predestined by a star.
Tall and strong, eyes that penetrate like an eagle.
Knowledge of an elder, calming the clouded hearts of villagers.
Possession of horses, living in peace on the Mashel River.
The change in the air would alter Nisqually life.

Non negotiable words on paper in language unknown.
Rights of familiar existence taken, but given what was allowed.
Many battles fought for rights lost in treaties;
the People incarcerated that could not fight,
led Leschi to battle.

Captured by deception, hope for the People placed within Leschi.
Senseless charges of murder in time of war, innocent though he was.
From trial to trial, from innocent to guilty, only sentenced to hang.
It was Leschi's final moments which led us all to this place.

The Bailiff said, "All arise"
Seven Judges enter the court of history in the making.
People grow silent in anticipation...
Four hours of waiting, listening, wondering what's going to happen.
Speakers speak, people weep, smiles on faces, while others frown.
The verdict has come, Chief Leschi is exonerated!
