The Treaty Trail: Isaac Stevens' Treaty Councils 1854-1856
Online Activities: Where in Time is Isaac Stevens?

A golden epaulet, an old sword, and a pair of images of a man in uniform, and in civilian clothes are the clues that will help you find Isaac Stevens in time. You'll explore the phases of his career by examining these items, and using external resources (books, images, and websites) to find authoritative information.

People's lives progress and change over time. For instance, a woman might go through the phases of student, career-woman, mother, grandmother. Each phase of life will be distinguished by accomplishments, and punctuated by the articles that she keeps for remembrance--perhaps family photos, jewelry, records, or books. To those who knew her, the meaning of such objects may be obvious, but as generations pass, that meaning can be obscured. We can only attempt to reconstruct her life through the things she cared enough about to save.

In this exercise, you will examine the career phases of Isaac Stevens, first Governor of Washington Territory, who lived from 1818 to 1862. You will work to discover the various positions he held from two images of Governor Stevens, and two items that survived him, coming to the History Museum through the estate of Hazard Stevens, his son.

Be sure to look for the links to the FIELD NOTES, where your findings will be logged. These notes will track your progress, and help fill in the blanks in your research.
